Only Fox 2 News and Show Me Progress Cover Union Rally

Yesterday, 300 union supporters rallied in St. Louis as part of nationwide "We Are One" events marking the anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., who was shot while in Memphis supporting sanitation workers trying to form a union. From what I heard, only Fox 2 News (with Charles Jaco) and progressive blog Show Me Progress covered the event. Here's the Fox 2 video:

The Post-Dispatch had articles from national organizations, and provided no coverage of the local events.

MLK Day Coverage

More photos are on the way from ForwardSTL photographer extraordinaire Juan Montana and others, but here's what I've seen in the mean time.

The AmeriCorps Alumni group in St. Louis helped out earlier today. Here's a description from Joe Jovanovich of what they were up to:
Today's service project in honor of Dr. King was planned in conjunction with AmeriCorps St. Louis, the Office of the Mayor Francis Slay, and AmeriCorps Alums of St. Louis. AmeriCorps St. Louis had over 60 of their Members volunteer as well as help lead overall recruitment and coordination of the project. The AmeriCorps Alums chapter was able to secure a $1000 grant to assist project implimentation through the Get Hands On campaign (www.community.handsonnetwork.org). We engaged over 300 volunteers in two projects: a community clean-up in the Greater Ville neighborhood, and a massive CFL lightbulb distribution in the 22nd Ward. Nearly 20,000 bulbs donated by Ameren to the City of St. Louis were distributed by volunteers to community residents. These bulbs, when properly utilized, are estimated to save over $200,000 in energy bills and will add up to a carbon reduction equivalent to taking 300 cars off the road.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Last Speech

On April 4, 1968, 42 years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis. The day before, he gave a prophetic speech in support of the Memphis sanitation workers union on strike in a struggle to be treated with decency. Here is perhaps the most amazing excerpt from that speech:
